O Come, All Ye Faithful was written by Englishman John Francis Wade in the 1740s. Wade composed the music and also wrote the original text in Latin, with the title Adeste Fidelis. For many years the song was thought to be an anonymously composed ancient Latin carol, but research showed that it was written by Wade, who taught music at the Roman Catholic center in Douay, France. The English translation that is most commonly used was written by Reverend Francis Oakeley in 1841.
